7th international conference Medical Review Auschwitz: Medicine Behind the Barbed Wire
Opis
The Polish Institute of Evidence Based Medicine and the Kraków Medical Society, in cooperation with the Institute of National Remembrance, and Jagiellonian University Medical College, invite medical professionals and students, bioethicists, and historians of medicine to the 7th international conference "Medical Review Auschwitz: Medicine Behind the Barbed Wire", taking place on October 6-8, 2026, in Kraków. This year, we are deeply honored to welcome Dr. Leon Weintraub, survivor of three concentration camps, as Guest of Honor for the second year in a row. His keynote address will once again bring essential testimony and the moral responsibilities of medicine. The aim of the conference is to educate the global medical community about medical ethics and practice in the context of the Second World War; to examine the conduct of doctors and other medical professionals in German Nazi concentration camps, ghettos, and other places of detention; and to expose abuses and ethical violations, thereby demonstrating the implications of the history of medicine during this period for modern medical practice and health care policy. This event is part of the Medical Review - Auschwitz project, dedicated to preserving and sharing the legacy of research published in Przegląd Lekarski - Oświęcim (1961-1991), one of the earliest efforts to document Nazi medical crimes. Conference partners include the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, Center for Bioethics and Humanities at the University of Colorado, Harvard Medical School Center for Bioethics, International Chair in Bioethics, FASPE Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics, the Regional Medical Chamber in Kraków and the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków. Conference is co-financed from the state budget, by the Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education as part of Wektory Nauki (Vectors of Science) program and by the Finkelstein Foundation. We look forward to seeing you in Kraków in October 2026. PROGRAM www.medical-auschwitz.com https://mra.piebm.org/conference/program/
