The museum began life in 1934 and was the first science museum outside of London, it moved to the current location in 1977. The building in Blandford square was built in 1893-7 as the Northern Headquarters for the Co-op wholesale society. The late Victorian building itself is impressive, with notable architectural features inside and out. There is a Great Hall on the top floor, this was once used as the meeting hall when it was the co-op, but was also used for plays and concerts. Though empty now you can still see the wrought iron girders made by Dorman Long, the same suppliers as for the Tyne Bridge. The Great Hall isn't usually open to the public but we have asked and they will let us know on the day if we can have access, it will depend on the number of staff available on the day. Inside the museum you can see Turbinia, once the faster ship in the world and a permanent gallery housing a display of England's Northern Cavalry Regiments. Looking around you will spot a replica of Swans first lightbulb, models of Stephensons engines, models of ships from Swan Hunters. In the costume stores there are 12,000 items, ranging from 4th century to contemporary fashion.
